Meals on Wheels Ocean County Nutrition Services Contractor

Pay Rate: $31.00  to $46.00 per hour

The Nutrition Services Contractor plans, develops, and coordinates all aspects of food service preparation and monitoring and provides nutrition education and counseling in compliance with State and County guidelines. Assists the Executive Director in maintaining quality food service standards including adherence to Title III of The OAA and NJAC 8:24-1, “Chapter 24 Sanitation in Retail Food Establishments and Food and Beverage Vending Machines” requirements.

The responsibilities and requirements of the Nutrition Services Contractor are established by the most recent NJ Standards for Nutrition Program for older adults.


RESPONSIBILITIES (including but are not limited to the following): 

  • Monitoring of the food preparation facility and the food service operation at nutrition sites on a quarterly basis.
  • Evaluation and monitoring of food safety in the preparation, packaging, and delivery of meals. This shall include compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, compliance with all food safety regulations, and evaluation of the nutritional adequacy of the meal served.
  • Periodic monitoring of home delivery routes for acceptability of temperature, quality and food safety of home delivered meals as received by the participant.
  • Making recommendations in the development of budget proposals as appropriate.
  • Plan, review and certify culturally diverse menus (using nutrient analysis) to ensure that each menu meets the minimum nutritional standards.
  • Develop and/or identify nutrition education materials and presentations relative to the needs of older adults (for use with homebound and congregate meal provision).
  • Conduct, and/or coordinate nutrition education programs for participants at senior centers and adult communities. Distribute literature to home delivered meal participants with their monthly menu and bi-annual nutrition articles for the More Than Meals Newsletter.
  •  Conduct, and/or coordinate and evaluate in-service training for nutrition staff and volunteers at least annually.
  • Assist in reviewing new facilities or planning the renovations of current facilities used for meal service or meal preparation to determine impact on food service.
  • Provide nutritional counseling for older adults requiring counseling services on a priority basis to enhance nutritional well-being. Evaluation and nutrition counseling by a dietitian will enable the participant or caregiver to plan for other meals not provided by the program.
  • Coordinate annual Nutrition Screening survey of clients.
  • Follow federal and state data collection requirements related to participants (such as NAPIS and USDA).
  • Provide technical assistance to AAAs and nutrition service providers on food service practices, equipment facilities, programming, training, and policy/procedures for food service.
  • Works with all project staff to promote the effective operation of the project.
  • Performs other duties, assignments and special projects as requested by the Executive Director.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Three years of recent, relevant experience working with older adults in a food and nutrition related capacity. Note: Possession of a master's degree in food, nutrition or institutional management may be substituted for one year of work experience.
  • Must be Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN); hold a current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Regular access to a vehicle, a valid New Jersey driver’s license, good driving record and adequate liability insurance coverage.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of older adults and an ability to relate to individuals in a way that maintains or fosters their dignity.
